An Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) can be installed on an aircraft either as a permanent or portable unit.
A permanently installed ELT is typically located near the tail and connected to an outside antenna. The ELT is automatically activated by an impact switch in the event of a crash.
A portable version, having been removed from its bracket and connected to its auxiliary antenna, becomes a survival beacon.
The ELT operates on three frequencies: 121.5MHz, 243.0MHz and 406MHz.
ELTs offer: - Global coverage - Precise pinpointing (to within 1NM, or less, if required) - Identification of the aircraft indistress (the ELT transmits a unique aircraft identification code) - Minimum maintenance: maintenance is limited to a monthly "self test" and battery replacement every six years.
